The Port Hunter

Identity Architecture in Practice

The Port Hunter identity draws from the maritime culture of Martha’s Vineyard, where trade, material, and environment shape both place and experience.

The system was developed to reflect the restaurant’s position within this context—translating coastal heritage into a refined visual language grounded in restraint, texture, and typographic clarity.

The result is an identity that balances rustic character with precision, creating a cohesive presence across physical and digital environments.

The Port Hunter logotype and oyster mark, restaurant identity system, Martha’s Vineyard

Place Context

Located in Edgartown, The Port Hunter exists within a landscape shaped by maritime trade, fishing culture, and seasonal rhythms.

The identity draws from this environment—referencing coastal materials, utilitarian typography, and the visual language of working waterfronts.

Identity System

The visual language centers on a custom logotype and illustrated oyster mark.

Typography is informed by historic maritime lettering—functional, enduring, and direct—while the mark introduces a distinctive symbol rooted in local culture.

Together, these elements establish a system that is both recognizable and adaptable across applications.

Editorial Menus

Menus were designed as tactile, editorial objects.

Layout, typography, and material choices emphasize clarity and hierarchy, allowing the content to remain primary while reinforcing the identity through structure and restraint.

Brand Environment

The identity extends into the physical space through signage, printed materials, and environmental details.

Hand-painted elements and material applications reinforce the connection between the brand and its coastal context, ensuring continuity between the visual system and the lived experience of the restaurant.

This project demonstrates how Identity Architecture can translate place, material, and cultural context into a cohesive hospitality identity system.
